**While the first two alien books were mildly tame, this book is a little different. I'm not saying it's Fifty Shades or anything, but Alex is eighteen, she's going off to college and she's been with her alien boyfriend for a year; there is guranteed to be some heat. I'm recommending this for upper YA/New Adult readers.**

Backpacks, Birkenstocks, and Boom-Boom Blockers

Oh my, this book is worth the read if for no other reason than the term Boom-Boom Blockers. Need I say more? I just love Magan Vernon’s humor and wit. This series really satisfied my love of aliens and my need for all-things-goofy. So, yes Magan Vernon you have a new fangirl!

So our happy little couple is all cutesy and in love again after a psycho-alien ex tried to destroy their relationship. Eeek. But now it’s time for Alex to go off to college (after all they can’t get married until she graduates….the whole peace treaty thing ya know). Ace comes into town to make the cross-country drive with Alex and settle her in at school (and much closer to him). A few kisses and hugs from the parental units later and the two are off to new adventures. The drive is long, boring, and then……

OMG! What was that? Alex flips their SUV and the road trip comes to a screeching halt. Thankfully Circe reinforcements show up and gets them out of the vehicle. But Ace…something is wrong with Ace! While he’s carted off to Circe, Alex is taken to school. She still has to settle in to the dorm and get ready for her first class. But what about Ace??

Once Alex is assured Ace is being treated and will be ok, she gives in and checks in at school. Meet new roommate, Lucy. I Love Lucy! Seriously, why didn’t I ever get a roommate like her in college? Lover of Birkenstocks, driver of a Volkswagen Thing (how awesome is that), and girlfriend to Riley………WHAT!?! Crazy Riley who held a gun to Alex’s head you say? Yup, one in the same.

But this is the new-and-improved, memory-wiped Riley. She’s fun, kind, and caring. What is THAT all about? Is it a set-up? Does she actually remember Alex and is trying to fulfill some evil plot? It sure seems fishy that of all the colleges and all the roommates in the world, Alex is bunking with crazy Riley’s new girlfriend.

Everyone else urges Alex to let it go (easier said then done when the girl tried to kill her). Alex doesn’t think she can, but then she does have other problems. Suddenly she’s like the Kim Kardashian of the inter-galactic tabloid kind. Being asked for an autograph by a purple space creature is her new normal. There’s also the whole “my boyfriend beams into my room but I can’t get into his pants” problem too. Could it be that Ace doesn’t really want to go through with the marriage? Or is it fate since just about every time they get close the ultimate Boom-Boom Blocker, Lucy walks in? (How hard is it to remember to put the sock on the door Alex?)

Ace is hiding something from Alex, but it’s not at all what she thinks. Every time they get close to sealing the deal, he backs off. When he finally tells her the truth, it definitely wasn’t what I expected. And there’s one teeny little detail he leaves out. Who am I kidding it’s HUGE!

So with marriage plans still on, boom-boom blockers handled, and a friendship with Riley developing, everything is ready for the happily ever after. Well, at least until wedding dress shopping is involved. Who is that lurking in the bridal shop? I won’t give it away, but this someone and their partner in crime worked very hard to get rid of Alex. A lot of events since she left for college were put into motion by these two and they won’t get let anyone spoil their efforts. The confrontation that goes down just made me go:

Your favorite characters all make an appearance in this final book of the trilogy. We see Alex’s who family, all of the interns, Monte (who is convinced he can swing Lucy the other way LOL), Simone, Brody, Gemma (the whole high school crew), and more. It’s a fantastic sendoff with each character getting some fun attention.

I really adore this series. I love the humor, the aliens, Alex, and of course the scrumptious Ace. It’s a light, fun read that is pure entertainment. Guyliner Lovers Unite! Beam Me Up Ace!

So now that Alex and Ace have avoided an alien invasion by agreeing to get married, what’s a girl to do? Well, she goes back to high school to finish her senior year of course. Alex still has to graduate and finish college according to the peace treaty that betroths her to her hottie alien boyfriend.

Now that Alex is back in the land of boring humans, she’s once again the goofy geek instead of the kick ass extra-terrestrial fighter. So she endures the usual torture from mean girl Gemma at school, but finds some solace at her new barista job when she meets her co-worker Simone. Finally a BFF!

Things are good: she’s still on her way to be valedictorian, she’s enjoying some female bonding, her old crush Brody is suddenly giving her a lot of attention (a girl can enjoy a little male attention even if she’s technically engaged right?), and the best perk of all? Ace can beam into her bedroom any time he wants!

I mean how AWESOME is that? Ace can so beam into my room anytime. Did I say that out loud? Ok, so anyway Alex’s life is all happy and wonderful.

Until Ace starts “running late” all the time. And Brody wants to be more than just friends. And maybe Alex doesn’t want to give up on her dream of going to Columbia. What’s a girl to do? I don’t know, maybe break up with an alien?

WHAT!?! I said maybe. Could it be possible that there is some sleep creep involved here? I mean, Brody is getting a bit obsessive. And why on earth is Alex suddenly questioning her feelings for Ace? She loves Ace! And who wouldn’t want to be the next Princess of Calta? There is the whole future mother-in-law from hell that is totally against the alien/human marriage. Could she really stoop so low as to use her sleep creepiness to try to break the treaty?

No worries, Ace is coming to town to help. And to meet Mom! And Grandpa! And wow, Ace sure looks a lot like one of Grandpa’s old war buddies. Eeeep!

Top moments in this book (besides the awesome beaming thing) include:

1. Dreams involving the world’s worst white rapper (and Alex being his ho, yo)
2. Monte’s totally inappropriate (but strangely appropriate) crudeness
3. The whole beaming thing (did I already say that?)
4. Mom meeting Ace
5. Ace’s preppy boy wardrobe
6. The whole beaming thing

As much as I loved this book, I have to admit that I really missed the aliens. There are a few here and there, but no one floats in goo, no purple people eater gets to duke it out with an invisible octohippo, and there is no phoning home. We do get to meet Monte (who needs his own book), but How to Break Up with an Alien reads slightly more YA contemporary. It’s still fun and quirky, and the whole beaming thing is just hot, but I hope we get to see some more E.T.s in the next installment.

So will they make it? Or will Alex find out that breaking up with an alien is hard to do? You’ll have to read it to find out.

Gorgeous Alien, Green Goo, and Guyliner!

I’m on a total alien binge, so when I heard about this book I couldn’t wait to read it. I wasn’t disappointed. It is funny, sweet, full of aliens, and Ace is just YUM! 

I have to say, the day before I started reading this I went to see the movie Monsters Vs. Aliens, so I couldn’t stop picturing B.O.B, Dr. Cockroach and crew hanging around and giving a few high fives. I love how this story drips in sci-fi, but doesn’t take itself too seriously. Some of the aliens are bizarre and the interaction between the different species is fun. 

Meet Alex Bianchi, a somewhat geeky over achiever that needs something on her Columbia application to help her stand out. Extra curricular activities aren’t her thing, so thank goodness her dad works for the ultra-secretive government compound called Circe. Just mentioning an internship there gets the Columbia recruiter to perk up. One call to Alex’s estranged father and a summer at Circe awaits.

Only Circe isn’t the military base Alex expected. It’s actually a huge compound, hidden in a mountain where aliens are housed. What the what? (Sorry, I’ve been dying to use that.) Leave it to poor Alex to give her dad the thumbs up the moment she steps inside the foreign little world, a sign that one should apparently never give in front of an alien. Just ask Alex as she’s nearly strangled to death by some slimy creature. But something or someone with gorgeous black eyes rescues her. The next thing she knows, she’s being treated by the Bug Man-a.k.a. an alien doc who I imagine looking like an orange roach (see Dr. Cockroach above). 

Alex struggles to fit in with the rest of the interns. While she’s still in high school, they’re all in college and one in particular is angry that Alex only got the much sought after position thanks to her well-respected dad. Whatever, Alex has more important things to do, like report to her assignment in online security! 

Hello Ace! Best. Internship. Ever. Alex can’t help but notice her gorgeous supervisor, I mean hello guyliner! What is guyliner you ask? 

But those eyes, she’s seen those eyes before. And boy do those eyes follow her everywhere. Such as into the cafeteria where Alex almost become a punching bag for an alien smackdown. But thankfully those black orbs swoop in and save her. Wait! That isn’t the first time! Those black eyes that swallow her up saved her once before, the first day she arrived at Circe. Coincidence? I think not.

Alex and Ace dance around their growing attraction, after all humans and aliens don’t mix. But what if they do? Well, there’s a few things about Ace Alex isn’t aware of and let’s just say falling in love with him could lead to the total annihilation of Earth. WHAT?!?  Bring on the mother ship, mix in some green goo I want to dive in to, and let the shenanigans begin. 

My only gripe with the story is it’s too short. I wanted more! 

I wanted more interaction with Alex and the other interns. By the end of the book we’re supposed to believe that a few of these guys are willing to go way out on a limb for her. I just didn’t see it. It was like the friendship developed some behind the scenes. 

I also had a hard time believing Alex could just jump into a spaceship and pilot it into outer space all by herself. I know, I realize the whole bug aliens and green goo I had no problem with, but seriously how can the chick just jump inside a flying saucer and become an instant Maverick? I still remember the first time I attempted to drive a stick shift. Let’s just say rolling half a mile down a hill backwards, into a ditch, with a screaming mother trying to jerk the steering wheel were involved. Maybe it’s just jealousy talking, but still. She was a computer nerd, it would have been more believable if she cracked some secret code and beamed herself aboard the mother ship. Just sayin.

Overall this is a fun, quirky read. If you love aliens I’m sure you will enjoy the humorous sci-fi elements and the swoon-worthy Ace. I read this book in a day and quickly jumped into the next two in the series. It’s addicting. 

On a side note, as I’m writing this the news is reporting of a possible UFO landing in Boca Raton. Ace? I’m here! Beam me up baby!

My number one book boyfriend always and forever. The first time he asked Jessica to pee in a cup for him and she got a view of the dreadlocked wonder boy, I was sold. SOLD. Every since I first read this book 12 years ago I’ve had a think for dreadlocked boys, but not of them hold a candle to Marcus Flutie.

Jennifer's Review:

The Only One is a contemporary romance, but it deals with other issues pertinent to real life. While Magan's witty humor and sexual innuendos exist in this book (and will have you laughing out loud) there is a very serious story being told here and its almost a teaching book to young adults. Clearly I can't reveal what serious life changer is because you need to feel the shock for yourself when you read it and then work through it alongside Melanie.

Melanie: Her Harry Potter obsession was cute and made her likable to me. She was a normal 19 year old college student. She is a little bit of a "nerd" and has a hard time letting loose (john boy helps her with this issue). She "talks" to herself through out the book which was pretty hilarious (but all of Magnan's books are pretty hilarious). The story is told from her point of view and when she encounters a life altering issue (that could happen to anyone) it really throws a curve ball at her and the reader.

Melanie's love interest -- John Boy -- He was a fraternity jock but with definitely more than meets the eye. He helped Melanie to be her own person, was there for her the whole time and was down right honest with her. I would remiss if I didn't mention just how hot he was too -- loincloth as a Halloween costume and looking good in it :-). They made a cute couple that had your rooting for them from the start -- think "Opposites Attract". The epilogue from John's perspective was great -- I make no secret that I LOVE changes in point of views -- so I really loved this!

The secondary characters added some depth. We saw a little bit of Monica -- which being the companion book to The Only Exception was expected. I liked her character: loud, outspoken, and a great best friend to Melanie.
So the next major secondary character was Melanie's sister: Val. I liked her no nonsense attitude and her humor. I could see taking her character to the next level in a 3rd companion book :-)

"You know I'm pretty sure that all that's involved in high school dancing is just dry humping and swaying back and forth," I said as Kai helped me move my parent's couch back.

"We don't have to do this right now either. It's a Sunday morning and all." I walked over to the front of the couch, not taking my eyes off of him.

"Homecoming is Saturday, and the only dance I know is the Hokey Pokey." He shrugged

"Besides Mom and my sisters are at small group and your parents can sleep through anything, so why not now?"

"Okay." I let out a deep breath and opened my computer. "But you really didn't take any kind of dance classes? I had ballroom dancing freshman year in gym."

"Bentley, I've gone to public school all of my life. The only dance we ever learned was line dancing when I was in grade school up in Wisconsin, and I'm not doing that at Homecoming."

He laughed.

I started up the song and set my laptop down and stepped in front of Kai, putting my right hand up toward him. “I definitely don’t think there will be line dancing at Homecoming,” I said, putting my hand in his.

“And you make fun of my music?” Kai asked as the song crooned through the speakers on my laptop. I put Kai’s right hand on my hip, and then placed my left hand on his upper arm.

“This is Sinatra, I really don’t think there is anything to be making fun of, and besides I don’t think we could really do ballroom dancing to punk rock.”

“I’m sure we could try." He smiled and kissed my forehead.

I rolled my eyes. “Okay,  now that we have the arm position it’s time to move our feet, and if you step on my bare feet I am going to punch you.”

He playfully hovered his foot over mine, so I pinched his arm. “If you don’t behave then I’m switching the music to country.”

He let out a big sarcastic sigh. “Fine.”

“Okay, so left foot then right foot then together,” I said as we moved in unison.

“Then right foot goes back and then the left foot meets it.”

We moved together doing a few box steps. It felt kind of silly to be dancing in my pajamas in the living room.

“You know, I really don’t think that anyone is going to be doing the waltz at Homecoming,” I muttered

I looked up to see him mouthing ‘left, right, together’.

“Well what do people usually do then?" He looked down at me and stopped mouthing the words.

The Sinatra song ended and a slower punk rock song played, one that Kai had actually put on my computer.

“Usually…" I put both my arms around his neck. “It’s kind of more of a close, swaying motion.”

“Oh." He wrapped his long arms around my waist and pulled me as close as I think two people can get when one was over six foot and the other was barely over five foot three.

“Like this?" He swayed slowly back and forth.

“Usually it’s not some sort of a giant dancing with a midget.” I laughed.

“Fine then." He bent at his knees and picked me up off of the ground, so that my legs were dangling in the air while he continued to sway back and forth. “Is that better, shorty?”

I wrapped my bare legs around his waist. “Now it is."

I leaned in and ran my tongue along his bottom lip, tracing the lines of his lip ring.

“I don’t think that’s part of the waltz." He smiled and pressed his forehead to mine.

“It is now." I kissed him, pretty hard, since he fell back into the couch with me still in his arms.

Maybe I should have taken him up on the night alone instead of Homecoming. It felt so good to just be in his arms, and the kissing wasn’t so bad either. I could forget about the world every time that Kai kissed me. It was like his lip piercing had some kind of magical powers that just made all my problems disappear as long as we were kissing.

My Review:

"Screw the lemons" this book is totally Sweet Tea!

First off, this is the fourth Magan Vernon book I've read recently. I absolutely adore her humor, sarcasm, and wit. I fell in love with Ace and his guyliner in the My Alien Romance series (check out my review at www.mereadalot.com) and now I’m loving Kai and the lip ring in Life, Love & Lemons. I love how Magan's male characters are out-of-the-ordinary and unique. 

Meet Bentley: rich girl, total snob, little miss everyone-loves-me. Well, at least until her dad gets laid off and she moves from the burbs to the nasty 70s apartment on the wrong side of town. Leaving her ritzy private school for the gang-infested public school isn’t the only shock. She actually has to get her manicured hands dirty with a real job at a burger joint if she wants gas money or new clothes. Poor little rich girl.

Of course Bentley is tough, and full of snark. Just because she isn’t in her elitest social circle during the day doesn’t mean she’s going to slum it with punk-rock-wannabe Kai. Nope. He can take his sarcasm and lip ring and choke on them.

But there is something about Kai. Underneath the slightly arrogant wit, punk band t-shits, & skinny jeans is a pretty amazing guy. Not too mention, he’s actually kinda hot. Maybe Bentley judged him a bit too harshly. Maybe he’s just what she needs when everything else in her life is going so wrong.

I loved watching Bentley try and navigate public high school. And she thought metal detectors were only for airports. And seriously, how was she supposed to know red was a gang color? Oops. But getting your purse stolen before actually entering the building is a first for the rough school. So as much as she'd like to blend in, Bentley is the talk of the hallway.

I adored the relationship between Bentley and Kai. I love when opposites attract. I swooned for Kai, but maybe that’s because I’ve known a few Kai’s in my life. The references in the book were hilarious and brought back my own HS memories. Of course our Perkins was really a Denny’s, but the garage band music, free bowling, & wanna-be rockers are right up my alley. Kai is Mr. Straight Edge. He doesn’t drink, smoke, or do drugs. Much like most of the “Kai’s” I knew back in the day. But enough about me and my walk down memory lane.

There are some great secondary characters including Gabby (her only real friend in public school), Brett (her only real friend back at private school), Brynne and her crew of punk rock bitc**s, Kai's adorable sisters, and even the sleazy Jake (who reminded me so much of Blane from Pretty in Pink). By far my favorite secondary character was Bentley's dad. He had me rolling on the floor in laughter a few times. 

So, the rest of the story we follow Bentley and Kai’s growing relationship, and continue to watch Bentley try to adjust to her new life (which is both heart-warming and flippin’ hilarious). I love how these two characters connect and bond. Here are some of my top moments in the book:

4. “Milk is good for your …” You’ll never guess Bentley’s dad’s philosophy on this
5. Orange hair is NOT punk rock (been there, done that)
6. Kai ruining all of his mom’s good towels
7. Prayer is good for the soul (at least w/Kai’s mom)
8. Bentley's MIA mom finally saving the day (& her hilarious method)
9. Foreskin Bandits
10. LIP RINGS!
11. Homecoming…..speaking of here is how I saw Kai at the dance:

I laughed my way through this book. The characters were fantastic and watching Bentley grow was sweet. I especially loved when she finally put her so-called “friends” in their place! You go girl! There are a few secrets revealed along the way that were unexpected. I really was surprised when the real reason behind Bentley's break-up with the icky ex Jake was revealed!

Overall I think this is another insanely fun Magan Vernon read. It’s short and sweet and you won’t want to put it down. She has definitely got a fangirl in me.
