Also, sneak into the Underworld to retrieve stolen property, battle the minions of Hades and Zeus, outwit psycho nymphs, slay a dragon, rescue a classmate, keep from getting her butt expelled from the one place designed to keep her safe …

… and stop kissing Kai, Prince of the Underworld.

My Ex From Hell is a YA romantic comedy/Greek mythology smackdown. Love meets comedy with a whole lot of sass in book one of this teen fantasy romance series. Compared to Kai and Sophie, Romeo and Juliet had it easy.

Jennifer's Review of My Ex From Hell:

This is the first book in the Blooming Goddess series and it makes a good first impression. I have to say that I am a fan of Greek Mythology so I was intrigued from page one! Its definitely a YA series so I will be recommending this series to my daughter soon who has loved The Percy Jackson and Lost Heroes series. Note that not all of the Greek Mythology details are accurate in this book --they are mostly accurate and that was good enough for me as it was easy to follow--Tellulah changed things for a reason in my opinion and the changes make sense -- just putting it out there if you are a stickler for things to be 100% accurate.  I kinda viewed it as suspenseful to see how Tellulah's tales were going to differ from traditional Greek mythology.

The story is told from Sophie's POV - a normal sarcastic teenage girl  at a boarding school with normal teenage problems. She has two loyal and totally lovable best friends, one annoying nemesis (thing popular, rich, pretty, and yoga obsessed) and one hot mystery guy. A prank that leads to a knee buckling kiss awakens a bit of her past -- and here we go: she's not a normal teenage girl BUT really is the Goddess Persephone, the Goddess of Spring stuck in a mortal's body because someone tried to kill her. Ahh, so the drama begins -- but what fun would the book be if it didn't have an awesome twist. The story unfolds as Sophie comes to terms with this new twist herself.

Hannah is her BFF who is not only beautiful but super smart (Totally a Proud Geek). Great display of friendship here! They had their own cute BFF rituals and didn't keep secrets for each other. Wow, so refreshing! I liked that they didn't keep secrets because so often in plots friends keep things from each other. So it was nice that Sophie laid it all out there all the time and Hannah accepted everything without a second thought. At no point was Hannah kept in the dark about anything because she was "human". She was Sophie's BFF and thus privy to everything Sophie was going through. As it should be!

The other best friend in their trio is my favorite character, Theo. He gives off a mysterious vibe but we don't get too much detail of him in this book (but you do in book #2 -- hip hip hooray so keep on reading!)

Kai, AKA Kyrillos, Son of Hades- so from what we know how about him in this book, well I just want to slap him! He is very infuriating from our first encounter with him. Because hello, I would of thought that Kai would have been just a little more happy to find Persephone after thinking she was dead. But instead he just gives off this arrogant, "I'm a Player" vibe. It was hard to get his mood swings (thankfully Tellulah fixes that in book #2 and we get chapters from his POV). When Kai does let something genuine slip out -- well you began to SWOON and it gives you a glimpse of the good that he holds within.

This was a FUN read with a fresh new take on Greek Mythology with a storyline that was refreshing. It will have you rolling with laughter at some points (even the chapter titles were funny) and I was excited to rush into book 2! 

Sophie Bloom’s junior year has been a bit of a train wreck. After the world’s greatest kiss re-awakened Sophie’s true identity as Persephone (Goddess of Spring and Savior of Humanity), she fought her dragon-lady guidance counselor to the death, navigated mean girl Bethany’s bitchy troublemaking, and dealt with the betrayal of her backstabbing ex, Kai (sexy Prince of Darkness). You’d think a girl could catch a break.

Yeah, right.

With Zeus stepping things up, it’s vital that Sophie retrieve Persephone’s memories and discover the location of the ritual to stop Zeus and Hades. So when Aphrodite strikes a deal that can unlock Sophie’s pre-mortal past, what choice does the teen goddess have but to accept?

The mission: stop media mogul Hermes from turning Bethany into a global mega-celebrity. The catch? Aphrodite partners Sophie and Kai to work together … and treat this suicide mission as a date. Which could work out for Sophie’s plan to force Kai to admit his feelings for her–if she doesn’t kill him first.

Add to that the fact that BFF Theo’s love life and other BFF Hannah’s actual life are in Sophie’s hands, and suddenly being a teenager—even a godlike one—seems a bit like … well, hell. Whatever happened to dinner and a movie?

Jennifer's Review:
After sharing an amazing kiss in book one with Kai, Sophie discovers that she is actually the goddess Persephone and the boy who kissed her is Kyrillos, son of Hades.

With Sophie's awakening as a goddess comes new powers and new enemies.  Where before she was a typical teenager with two loyal and lovable best friends, and  1 annoying nemesis -- Bethany, the popular, rich, pretty yogi-wannabe who spreads her crazy "mantras" like they are gospel. Now, Sophie is being pursued by both Zeus and Hades for something Persephone was planning with Kyrillos before Persephone became Sophie.

Book 1 ends with what seems to a betrayal by Kai (i.e. Kyrillos).  Sophie hopes to never see him again. Unfortunately her father, Zeus, kidnaps Sophie and she ends up in the same room with Kai -- both attached to a painful energy sucking machine. Zeus and Hades have teamed up against SOPHIE and KAI. Using her brain to outsmart the "energy sucking manacles" Sophie and  Kai escape. Kai sends Sohpie back to school with a promised to join her shortly. Upon returning to school, Sophie discovers that Bethany has taken over --  literally. Everyone has fallen under her spell and her popularity has even spread to a television reality show! What??? Yeah, craziness!

I liked book two better than book one.  We meet more gods (We meet Hephaestus, Hermes, Aphrodite, Pierce/Eros/Cupid) and a lot more history. I loved Festos (Hephaestus) and his tie to Theo makes for an interesting story line. Festos is loyal, feisty and fierce. He was a great addition to this already great line up of characters. He totally tops my list of fav characters.  I like their relationship almost as much as I like Kai and Sophie's.  Kai and Sophie are hysterical with all the bantering and innuendos. We also get a lot more insight into Kai and that was good because in book 1 you really couldn't figure out if Kai was a jerk or if he was sincere. We also see their relationship grow and Kai really starts to appreciate and love Sophie (not just Persephone). Love Kai!

So if you have read other YA books about Greek Mythology then you expect: quests, challenges, gods, demigods, and a prophecy -- this one does not disappoint. As the title implies Kai asks Sophie out on a date and it ends up being a crazy, globe trotting quest to get her memories back and stop Bethany from taking over that ends with a life threatening challenge game set up by Hermes. Whew! its a whirlwind!

Jennifer's Review:

I have to say I was a little skeptical of how Linda was going to successfully execute this plot! To sum it up it is a story of forgiveness, healing and creating your own new life story in the wake of a horrible tragedy.

Three years ago, when Paige was 15 her brother Trace was accidentally killed by another teenager in a fight. She and Trace were very close and Paige sees his death as murder. After losing him, her mom went into a depression, and her dad became a mean drunk. Then 2 years after losing Trace, she loses her mom. All tied to Trace's accidental death. That's a lot for one person to go through. After graduating from high school she heads off to college, but not to follow her dreams. No. She's going to follow Trace's dreams. She goes to his college of choice, Granton and plans to pursue the degree he would of chosen.

First day of classes, and who shares the class with her?? Her brothers killer, Logan Xander. Paige runs out the room the moment she hears his name and wonders how is this happening to her?

What follows is the process of letting go, moving on and, for both Paige and Logan, finding their new self.  Paige has had so much hate built up against Logan -- he took her brothers life and has caused her and her family an immense amount of pain that is unending. She assumes he is this arrogant rich kid who got off from bearing any responsibility for Trace's death because of his hotshot lawyer dad. She didn't count on Logan being the complete opposite of what she thought...She didn't count on him carrying a guilt so strong.

Logan.....he's lived the past 3 years trying to do good things and be a good person. Working, going to school, living by himself, and doing good deeds for others. But Logan keeps himself from getting close to anyone as he feels he doesn't deserve any goodness in his life. He has never forgotten or forgiven himself for taking Trace's life. His family,well they shunned him so that he is out there on his own. He never thought he'd come face to face Trace's little sister.... Paige Zukowski.

The interaction of the characters was very nicely done. The way Linda writes is great. I love the alternating point of views. The story tells both sides of the story of the terrible tragedy. Linda makes you feel and understand both perspectives which is a tough thing to do. You actually feel your heart breaking for both of them. My issue with the book was that I thought too much negative stuff (really horrible situations)  happened to Paige in the span of this book. I could of done with just a little less tragedy.

Her excitement touched him. “It seemed like a good idea. You didn’t have a phone number to give me, and I really missed you. It’s gonna get harder to see you. I thought this way we could stay in touch and actually talk whenever we want.”

She closed her hand around the precious phone and turned pensive.

“Is something wrong?” He wondered what could have upset her.

“I don’t know if I should accept this.” She gazed up at him with large doe eyes. He couldn’t believe this. She needed to take the phone.

“We barely know each other, and, well…” Mischief lit her face, and he wondered what she was up to. “We’ve never even kissed.”

Peter paused and took a good look at her. He’d been wondering how to sneak a kiss; she just made it simple.

He tossed the umbrella aside and pulled her close. He let his fingers tangle in her wet hair and lowered his mouth to hers. He kissed her long and slow, taking his sweet time. Cold rain trickled down his neck as he savored each moment. Startled at first, Libby now matched his kiss. He enjoyed each touch of her tender lips.

He slowly pulled away.

“Now can you take the phone?” His forehead rested against hers.

“Yeah, I think so,” she answered in a breathy voice.

“I’d better be sure.” Empowered by their perfect chemistry, he leaned in for more. Her body melted against him. He wrapped his other arm around her and pulled her close.

“Wow,” she whispered, her eyes dark and smoky.

“Haven’t you ever been kissed before?” His eyes searched hers.

“Not like that.”

“I’ll take that as a no. You are not ready to talk reasonably without flying into a rage.”

About the Author

Angie Stanton never planned on writing books, she wanted to be a Rockette. However, growing up in a rural setting with her brothers' 4-H pigs as pets, dance didn't work out. Instead she became an avid daydreamer. After years of perfecting stories in her head she began to write them down and the rest is history.

Nikolas could have easily been third in the rankings, maybe even D’s right hand, but he maintained his Reaper of Georgia status to keep under the radar for the side missions he would be given. It baffled Balthazar that Arianne didn’t seem to know this about Nikolas.

“You’re in love with him,” he responded.

“Since I started high school.”

Nikolas? Entertaining love? From a human, no less. “And how’s that going for you?”

Creating Chemistry Guest Post

Well, a very wise person once told me that soul mates are two people who come together like puzzle pieces. Neither is perfect. In fact, one or both can be deeply flawed. However, their pieces somehow come together and mesh perfectly. If you stand back and examine your own personal relationships and you are honest, you can see this in your own partner. You're each stronger because of the other. You complete each other. I also believe that two people who are too much the same will butt heads. So usually I like my FMC & MMC to be opposites in one way or another. It's always fun to watch them be forced to compromise and meet halfway.

Creating the chemistry is different for each couple. They need to click. Each needs to make a lasting impression on the other, whether good or bad. The impression needs to stick so that days, weeks, maybe even months later they are still bubbling or cursing under their breath about it. I'll take either. ;) Then I build on that. If she wants to hate him, this will now become a challenge. Same goes for him because there will be one very redeeming quality that will suck the other person in. Then again I build on that. Their conversations have to be entertaining whether they're romantic, mysterious (cryptic), or argumentative. There has to be something that, regardless of the topic of conversation, leaves both MCs and the reader wanting and waiting for them to talk to one another again.

All this and their body language go hand in hand: the tense stance when trying hard not to give into to doing or saying what they really want and the deep, intense uncontrollable gazes. The unforgettable ones give them (sometimes infuriatingly) the ever-present-in-romance-novels butterflies.

My husband often asks me as he passes by my desk and I'm writing, "What's that goofy smile about?" That's usually a good sign that the chemistry is working, because if I'm feeling the irrepressible need to smile like a goofball as I'm writing the dialogue, then we're good. LOL. On a sidenote, building to that moment—creating that chemistry that will not be suppressed no matter how hard either side tries—is my favorite part of writing romance. =D

EXCERPT

From his trunk, he pulls two bodies that are clearly women with sackcloth over their heads. Damn, they have some good-looking bodies. Carlos is going to shit a brick when I show him what he gets to “take care of” for the next couple of weeks. I turn two barrels over upside down and place them beside each other. All the employees have stopped their work, and now all the attention is on the two females being lead to the barrels. I signal to Richard to let them sit. He sits them down. They are deathly still. Their hands are handcuffed together in the front and they are both in jeans and designer tops.

“Looks like we’ve hit the jackpot. Maybe we shouldn’t kidnap, but we should ransom,” I say looking over at the designer clothes and shoes. I raise my voice for all the workers to hear. “Let this be a lesson to all of you. This is what happens when you cross me. This is what will happen to your wives and daughters. Got that?” I yell it loud, and I notice one of the girls starts to tremble. Good. I need to instill the fear of God in these two as well. A few of the employees nod, but most look down at the ground in fear. “I didn’t hear any of you. YOU GOT THAT?”

I hear a low grumble throughout the warehouse, and I know that I have their attention. “Okay, Carlos. Do the honors since I’m putting you in charge.” He walks over to the girls with a sick grin on his face and I can only wonder what’s going through his deranged mind. He steps up to them and lifts off the sackcloths simultaneously.

The first sight I see are those blue eyes; the ones that look into the depths of my soul. Next, it’s the blonde hair.

   

Sitting right in front of me is Claire.
