Daughter of Chaos by Jen McConnel

Daughter of Chaos (Red Magic #1)

There comes a time in every witch's life when she must choose her path. Darlena's friends have already chosen, so why is it so hard for her to make up her mind? Now, Darlena is out of time. Under pressure from Hecate, the Queen of all witches, Darlena makes a rash decision to choose Red magic, a path no witch in her right mind would dare take. As a Red witch, she will be responsible for chaos and mayhem, drawing her deep into darkness. Will the power of Red magic prove too much for Darlena, or will she learn to control it before it's too late?

DAUGHTER OF CHAOS is the first in the RED MAGIC paranormal YA trilogy

Jennifer's Review:
This is the first installment in a new series, that is centered around witches.
We meet our main character Darlena, a 16 year old witch. She is basically a regular teenager -- She does goto a school where there are other witches she is not alone in her struggles, and she has good friends, and loving parents.  In the witch community, at 16 they have to decide which path of magic to continue forward and become an expert in -- White, Black, or Green (i.e. kinda like choosing your degree). All of Darlena's friends have chosen and there is an enormous of pressure of Darlena to choose her path. Unfortunately for Darlena she is equally good at all three paths and therefore can't and doesn't want to choose. In a rash moment during a confrontation with Hecate, the Queen of all witches Darlena chooses RED. (this is one point I was confused on as where did RED come from...it didn't seem like a choice --my assumption is that the choice came from somewhere in Darlena's subconscious -- but I didn't feel it was explained well enough for me -- I moved past this pretty quickly b/c in the grand scheme of things -- it was not important)
I really liked Darlena's personality -- she was kind hearted, feisty, strong, and stood up for what she believed in.

Another key item I liked -- was Darlena's relationship with her parents (especially  her mom) -- a quality I think we should see more often in YA books. It was refreshing and sets a good example for the kids out there today. Darlena and her parents had a fierce love and support for each-other.

The plot was very well executed, the book moved at a good pace and kept my attention. I happen to love Mythology and Jen did a great job of blending that into the witches culture which I really liked - to me that was a fairly new concept (the combo) and one that I really enjoyed.  I loved how she introduces us to all different Gods and Goddess's (and not just Greek ones). The were different kinds of magic, each having their own strengths and those who yield them having different personalities. Darlena choice - RED is essentially the control or lack of control of chaos. There is a romance element but instead of two people coming together for the first time. The book kicks off with the couple already broken up. This is different that what we normally see in books so I thought it was fresh, different and I welcomed it.

Lastly I can say that I am NOT a book cover person. I personally read everything on the kindle now so I think the covers lose something for me now than when I used to goto the book store trying to find my next read. But I really liked the cover of Jen's book. I found it that it really grabbed my attention!

I think this is a great start the series, and  I am looking forward to seeing where Darlena’s path takes her next.

Jennifer's Review
Great introduction to the Mortal enchantment series with this novella. It definitely left me interested in getting Book 1 in the series when it comes out. In the short 74 pages Stacey packs in: Introduction to the main characters, lots of action, courage, mystery, and sacrifice.

The Characters:

Rowan:
Heir to the Fire Court Throne. Strong and loyal. I really liked hearing things from his POV and being introduced to the world of Avalon from his eyes. Rowan finds himself with a choice: kill an innocent and take over as King of the Fire court -- rule as fair and just ruler (thus sparing countless innocents in the future) or do the right thing, stand up to his mother. What will this cost himself, Marcus and the rest of the fire court if he does?

Marcus:
A Hellhound and Rowan's best friend. Also loyal and strong like Rowan. Their friendship was GREAT! Nice to see a strong male/male friendship in a book.

Queen Prisma -- Rowan's Mom and Queen of the Fire Element Court. Ugh, Could not stand her! Heartless, cold, and vicious. What more is there to say?

King Taron, - King of the Air Court and Father to Kalin. From what we see of King Taron -  he is a fair and just ruler and a loving father.

Kalin - Daughter of King Taron of the air court. We only get to see Kalin from afar. Her father King Taron has kept her in the mortal world with her mother until her 16th birthday. I am anxious to hear more about her and see how her story unfolds!

How the story unfolds
Rowan has kept himself away from Fire court due to the way his Mother rules the court -- She is heartless, vicious, and violent. Rowan gets called to the court by his mother in the guise of him taking over as King. Rowan is suspicious as he never thought there would be a chance his mother would even think of abdicating her throne -- and of course there is a hitch to him being King -- kill the Air King’s daughter, Kalin. Can Rowan push his morals to the side and take an innocent life so that he can rule the fire court and make great change in how the Fire Court is ruled.

Summary: Great prequel that ends with a bang! I am excited to start the series and see where it goes!

Journey Landaran by Judy Goodwin - REVIEW

Journey to Landaran (Sprit Maga Saga #1)
By Judy Goodwin

Aidah and her twin brother Tavish have always had a knack for getting into trouble. From pie stealing and pranks to hunting for magical creatures, they have always escaped notice in their tiny mountain village.

Until now.

Aidah begins seeing visions through her brother’s eyes. He’s a Firestarter, gifted with the Talent to control light and heat, destined to become a Sun Mage in the great city of Landaran. But he doesn’t want to leave without his sister. As storm clouds gather, Aidah dreams of a beautiful man, a frightening man, calling to her.

She fears the truth. That she may developing a Talent of her own, one that will change their lives forever.

The power to read minds. To possess bodies. To travel inside dreams. In the world of Ernid, Spirit is the ultimate power.

Nations will go to war over them.

***Warnings for mature themes including child molestation.***

Jennifer's Review:

Young twins, Aidah and Tavish Dernholt are not only siblings but best friends -- they do everything together -- including getting into lots of trouble.  Their bond is strong and Judy does a good job of describing and getting the read to understand their relationship. We follow Aidah and Tavish in their world -- a world where "talents" exist. There are three different talents, Life (Spirit), Fire (Sun), and Storm. Not everyone has a talent: --some have varying degrees of potential and some have none.  Once your talent emerges you goto the city of Landaran to become trained to become a "Mage" of that talent. I enjoyed the premise of the talents and Judy descriptions were wonderful. She is able to paint the picture with words.

So for the Twins:
Tavish’ talent shows up early and he finds that he has the Fire Talent, meaning that he has the ability to control light/fire/heat. At first it seems that Aidah doesn't really have a talent but wow....when it starts to come through its powerful and everything in their world changes as a result. She is a Life Talent -- she has the ability to control life and energy.

The bad guy:
Rangwar -- Life/ Sprit Mage. He is clearly using his powers for evil and he wants Aidah and will stop at nothing to get her. He honestly was a little too bad for me.

Because of Rangwar's wrath on the city, Aidah and Tavish are forced to travel from their home to the main capitol, Landaran in search of safety and training for Aidah. They set out with their Uncle and Guardian Lupa (kinda like a wolf/dog). They end up running into a band of gypsies and some extended family who help them along their way. I really enjoyed the characters that they met along the way -- I think they made the book for me and would love to see more of them.

So the question is -- Will they make it to Landaran and what will it cost them?

The only issues I had with the book is that I thought the characters should of been older than 14 years old. The book as it clearly states does have some "distrurbing" scences/concepts that were made even more disturbing given the age that characters are supposed to be.
The other issue I had which was minor is the journey took entirely too long -- I was kinda hoping for more with some of the characters they met along the way and possibly more once they got to Landaran. Perhaps that is to come in the next installment?
Overall a good read for a 16+ years old audience.

Series: The Blooming Goddess Trilogy #3
Genre: YA Fantasy/Mythology
Publication Date: 3/20/14
Hosted by: Wordsmith Publicity

Book Description

To say that Sophie Bloom is at the top of her game with one only week until spring equinox and the final showdown with Zeus and Hades would be, well, lying. The Goddess of Spring feels more like the Goddess of Bzz Thanks For Playing than the savior of humanity. And could her relationships be any more messed up?

Good times.

Sophie is convinced that things can’t get any worse than crawling back to her mother Demeter and begging for help. But she’s about to find out how very wrong she is.

It’s a race against time for Sophie to implement the big battle strategy in the YA romantic comedy/Greek mythology finale My Life From Hell. Love meets comedy with a whole lot of sass in book three of this teen fantasy romance series. Save herself; save the world. Humanity may be screwed.

Excerpt

Of all the Prince of Darkness’ powers, his best were his bone-melting super-kisses. Which is why, when my boyfriend Kai, (formally known as Kyrillos, son of Hades, Lord of the Underworld) pushed me up against my bedroom wall with a liplock of mind whacking proportions, I didn’t do much other than grip his shoulders, try to stay in an upright position, and willingly participate.

But as right as it felt, I also knew that it was very very wrong.

“We have to talk,” I gasped as I came up for air.

“Overrated,” Kai murmured, nudging his hips up against mine. Instead of talking, he opted for Plan B, which was pretty much a new and improved version of Plan A. His hand clasped the back of my head to pull me closer.

If I pressed myself any harder against him, I’d be behind him.

Maybe that would be a good thing. Then I wouldn’t be distracted by things like the way his stupidly gorgeously-lashed eyes fixated on me, their normal espresso brown darkened and full of heat.

Kai shook his head, flinging a wayward lock of dark hair out of his eyes. That just made me want to sink my hands into his hair. And like the most pathetic Pavlovian conditioning, one of my hands snaked up to twine my fingers into the curled ends just below his ears.

His breath caught at my caress.

Kai leaned forward and gave me the most fleeting, teasing kiss, his lips brushing mine. My stomach fluttered at hummingbird speed in that split second of connection.

Kissing, touching; our chemistry was off the scale.

Sadly, so was the weight of our baggage.

About the author
Tellulah Darling
noun

Sassy girls. Swoony boys. What could go wrong?

1. YA romantic comedy author because her first kiss sucked and she's compensating.
2. Alter ego of former screenwriter.
3. Sassy minx.

Writes about: where love meets comedy. Awkwardness ensues.

Tellulah Darling is a firm believer that some of the best stories happen when love meets comedy. Which is why she has so much fun writing young adult romantic comedy novels. Her tales span contemporary, teen fantasy romance, and YA Greek mythology, and range from stand alone books to series. For Tellulah, teen romance is the most passionate, intense, and awkward there is – a comedy goldmine. Plus smart, mouthy, teen girls rock.
